How to Prepare for Your PRP Microneedling Session

Good preparation makes a real difference to how your skin responds to PRP microneedling, how comfortable you are, and how quickly you recover. Here is what to do a week before, the day before, on the day and afterward.

What is a PRP microneedling session?

Microneedling uses fine, sterile needles to make controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and smooth.

PRP, short for platelet-rich plasma, is made from your own blood, processed to concentrate the platelets and their growth factors. Combined with microneedling, PRP supports healing and cell renewal.

At a PRP microneedling session, your provider draws a small amount of blood, spins it in a centrifuge to separate the PRP, and applies it to your skin during microneedling. The whole visit usually takes 60 to 90 minutes, and improvements in texture, tone and elasticity build over the following weeks.

Why preparation matters

Preparing properly is not only about comfort. What you do beforehand affects how your skin responds, how quickly you recover and how good your result is.

When your body and skin are in good condition, your skin is better placed to heal well and build collagen. Good preparation also helps limit common side effects such as redness, swelling and bruising.

Following the pre-treatment guidelines helps your provider give you a safer, more consistent result, whether you are treating fine lines, acne scars or uneven tone.

One week before your session

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E, unless your physician prescribed them. These raise the chance of bruising. Never stop a prescribed medication without asking the doctor who prescribed it.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate your skin and affect circulation.
  • Stop retinoids, exfoliants and strong acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid, to avoid extra sensitivity during microneedling.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well, with plenty of leafy greens and antioxidant-rich foods to support your skin.
  • Avoid tanning, waxing and harsh skin treatments for at least a week. Calm, unirritated skin makes microneedling safer and more effective.

24 hours before your appointment

  • Drink plenty of water. Being well hydrated makes the blood draw easier.
  • Plan to arrive with a clean face and no makeup, to keep the treatment area clean and reduce irritation.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking, which constrict blood vessels and reduce oxygen to the skin, affecting healing.
  • Get a full night's sleep so your body is rested.
  • Bring a list of your skincare products and medications to review with your provider, so nothing you use interferes with the treatment.

What to expect on the day

  1. The blood draw. A small blood sample is taken, much like a routine lab test, and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma.
  2. Cleansing and numbing. Your skin is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied. Numbing usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Microneedling with PRP. Your provider applies the PRP while microneedling, using a device that makes controlled micro-channels in the skin so the PRP can reach deeper layers.
  4. Right afterward. Mild redness, warmth or sensitivity is normal and is a sign your skin's healing response has started.

The whole visit usually takes 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Aftercare tips for healing well

  • Do not touch or wash your face for at least 12 hours, so the PRP can absorb and the micro-channels begin to close.
  • Skip makeup, sun exposure and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours, to avoid irritation, sweat and bacteria in the treated skin.
  • Use gentle, hydrating products your provider recommends, such as hyaluronic acid or aloe vera, to soothe the skin.
  • Wear sunscreen every day, and avoid harsh skincare such as exfoliants, retinoids and acids for several days.
  • Be patient. Improvements in tone, texture and radiance usually appear within two to three weeks, and collagen keeps rebuilding over the following months.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Arriving dehydrated. Good hydration makes the blood draw easier and supports healing.
  • Taking anti-inflammatories right after treatment. Ibuprofen or aspirin may blunt the inflammation your skin uses to heal. Ask your provider what to take for discomfort instead.
  • Using active skincare too soon. Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C serums for at least a few days, as they can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Sunbathing or swimming during recovery. UV light and chlorinated water can irritate the skin, raise the risk of infection and disrupt healing.
  • Choosing an unlicensed or inexperienced provider. Book PRP microneedling with a qualified medical professional who uses medical-grade equipment and sterile technique.

Frequently asked questions

How soon before an event should I schedule my PRP microneedling session?

At least two to three weeks before any major event. That gives redness time to settle and your skin time to show improvements in texture, tone and glow.

Is PRP microneedling painful?

Most people describe it as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. Numbing cream is applied first, and you may feel slight pressure or tingling during microneedling.

How long does the redness last?

Mild redness or swelling usually lasts 24 to 48 hours, similar to a light sunburn. It can last a little longer depending on your skin type and sensitivity. Makeup can usually be worn again after 48 hours.

Can I combine PRP microneedling with other treatments?

Yes, PRP microneedling can be combined with other treatments, such as Botox, as part of a plan. Your provider will space the treatments safely so your skin heals well. Our post on combining Botox with microneedling or PRP explains the timing.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people benefit from a series of three to four sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart. Your provider will tailor the plan to your skin, its condition and your goals. See how often you should get microneedling for more.
