Botox is a purified neurotoxin (botulinum toxin type A) that temporarily relaxes the muscles behind dynamic wrinkles, the lines caused by repeated expressions such as frowning, squinting and smiling. Injected well, it smooths those lines without taking away your ability to express emotion.
How Botox works
How neurotoxins relax facial muscles
Botox blocks the nerve signals that make a muscle contract. When the muscle relaxes, the skin above it looks smoother and more even. The effect develops gradually over a few days and usually lasts three to four months. With regular treatment, the muscles tend to contract less forcefully, which can make results last longer over time.
Common areas treated with Botox
Botox is used on high-movement areas of the face where lines tend to form:
- Forehead lines: the horizontal creases from raising your eyebrows
- Frown lines (glabellar lines): the "11s" between the brows
- Crow's feet: fine lines at the corners of the eyes
- Bunny lines: wrinkles along the sides of the nose
- Jaw and masseter: contouring the jaw and easing teeth grinding
- Chin dimpling and lip lines: a smoother, more balanced lower face
Each plan at Lotus MD is tailored to your goals, for subtle, symmetrical results.
FDA-approved medical uses
Beyond cosmetic treatment, Botox is FDA-approved for several medical uses, including chronic migraine, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), neck spasms (cervical dystonia), overactive bladder, and eye muscle conditions (strabismus and blepharospasm). This post is about cosmetic Botox.
Benefits of Botox
Botox is one of the most trusted non-surgical cosmetic treatments. At Lotus MD, every treatment is carefully planned and given by medical professionals, aiming for natural results that refresh rather than change your appearance.

Smoother skin
With precise placement, Botox softens fine lines and expression lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. Most people see a difference within a few days, with the full result within two weeks. Regular treatment maintains it, with no downtime.
Preventative Botox
You do not have to wait for wrinkles to start. Many people in their late 20s and early 30s choose preventative Botox to stop fine lines deepening. By limiting repeated contractions, Botox slows the formation of deeper lines and may reduce the need for more intensive treatment later.
Natural results with the right dose
We aim for natural, balanced results through precise dosing and technique. Your facial anatomy and expressions are taken into account so you still look like yourself, just more rested, without stiffness or a frozen look.
Botox treatment areas at Lotus MD
Every treatment starts with an assessment of your facial structure, muscle movement and skin, so the result is subtle and keeps natural expression.

Forehead and frown lines
These are among the most common areas treated. Relaxing the muscles that raise the brows and pull them together smooths horizontal forehead lines and the "11s" between the eyebrows, for a calmer, more rested look.
Crow's feet
Fine lines around the eyes are often the first sign of aging. Botox softens them by targeting the small muscles that contract when you smile or squint. Your smile still looks natural, just softer.
Bunny lines and lip flip
Bunny lines appear along the bridge of the nose when you scrunch or laugh, and Botox relaxes the muscles behind them. A Botox lip flip relaxes the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip turns out slightly, for a subtly fuller look without filler.
Chin and jaw
Botox can smooth chin dimpling by relaxing overactive chin muscles. In the jaw, it can relax enlarged masseter muscles, which can slim the lower face, ease jaw tension and reduce teeth grinding (bruxism).
Botox and dermal fillers: the difference
Botox and fillers are both injectables, but they do different jobs.
How they complement each other
Botox smooths dynamic wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that cause them. Dermal fillers, often made from hyaluronic acid, address static lines and volume loss, plumping and lifting areas that have lost fullness, such as the cheeks, lips and under-eyes. Together, they can soften expression lines and restore volume and contour.
When to choose one over the other
- Choose Botox if your main goal is to smooth lines caused by movement, such as forehead lines, frown lines or crow's feet.
- Choose fillers if you want to restore volume, contour your features or add subtle fullness to the cheeks or lips.
At your consultation, your provider assesses your anatomy, expressions and skin, and often a combination gives the most natural result. Read more in Botox vs. fillers: which one is right for you? and on our filler and facial balancing page.
What to expect at your Botox appointment
Every step is carried out under the direction of Dr. Sanghera.

Consultation and facial assessment
Your visit starts with a consultation. Your provider looks at your skin, facial structure and movement to decide which areas will benefit most, talks through your goals, reviews your medical history and answers your questions.
The injections
Once your plan is agreed, the injections usually take 10 to 20 minutes. Very fine needles keep discomfort low, and most people describe a quick pinch. There is no downtime, so you can go back to work or your day straight away.
Right after treatment
You may have minor redness, swelling or tenderness where the needle went in, which usually fades within a few hours. We usually recommend:
- avoiding strenuous exercise, alcohol and lying down for 4 to 6 hours
- not touching or massaging the treated areas
- using gentle skincare for the next 24 hours
Results usually begin within 3 to 5 days, with the full effect at around two weeks. Treatment every three to four months maintains the result.
Aftercare and recovery
What to do after Botox
- Stay upright for at least four hours after treatment.
- Your provider may ask you to gently use the treated muscles (smile, frown, raise your eyebrows) in the first hours.
- Use a cold compress if needed for minor redness or swelling.
- Follow your provider's aftercare plan, including any follow-up appointment.
What to avoid for 24 to 48 hours
- heavy exercise or strenuous activity
- lying flat or bending over a lot
- massaging or rubbing the treated areas
- makeup or harsh skincare on the treated areas
- alcohol, and blood-thinning medications unless your doctor prescribed them
How long results last
Results usually show within 3 to 5 days, reach their full effect in about two weeks, and last three to four months on average, depending on your metabolism, muscle activity and the area treated. Over time, many patients find they need fewer units or less frequent sessions. See how long Botox lasts for more.
Safety, side effects and who should not have Botox
Dr. Sanghera, a board-certified physician, oversees Botox treatment at Lotus MD so that it follows medical best practice. Botox is widely considered a safe, non-surgical treatment, but it helps to know the possible side effects and when to call.
Common, mild side effects
These usually settle within a few hours to a few days:
- slight redness, swelling or tenderness where the needle went in
- minor bruising
- a mild headache or tightness in the treated area
- temporary eyelid heaviness (rare and short-lived)
When to contact your provider
Complications are rare, but contact Lotus MD if you notice:
- swelling, redness or discomfort lasting more than a few days
- asymmetry or uneven relaxation
- difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing (very rare, and needs urgent medical attention)
Why medical oversight matters
Botox should always be given by a qualified medical professional. At Lotus MD, treatment is physician-led, for accurate dosing and placement. Medical oversight helps avoid complications and overcorrection, keeps results balanced and natural, and makes it safe to combine Botox with other treatments.
Why choose Lotus MD for Botox

Frequently asked questions
How soon will I see results?
You may notice smoother skin within 3 to 5 days, with full results at 10 to 14 days. The timing varies slightly with your muscle activity, metabolism and the areas treated.
How often should I get Botox?
For most people, results last about three to four months, and regular maintenance keeps lines from returning. Over time, consistent treatment may mean you need fewer units or less frequent appointments. Your provider will suggest a schedule at your consultation.
Can Botox be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Botox pairs well with other Lotus MD treatments, such as microneedling, microneedling with PRP and dermal fillers, to improve texture, build collagen and restore volume. See combining Botox with microneedling or PRP.
